What to Wear for Ballet Class

At Emily Rose Ballet, we want every dancer to feel comfortable, confident, and free to express themselves. Remember, it's most important to wear something that makes you feel great! When you love your outfit and feel good in your skin, it can boost your confidence and help you dance your best. Ballet is about finding joy in movement, and that starts with how you feel in your own body.

While traditional ballet attire is always welcome, it’s not a requirement. Here’s what we recommend:

Hair

Please keep your hair neatly secured out of your face. A classic ballet bun works beautifully, but a ponytail, braid, or headband is just as effective. The goal is to keep your hair from distracting you while you dance.  If you do want to give the ballet bun a go - the video 'How to make a bun' at the bottom of this page is there to help!

Attire

You can opt for traditional ballet gear like a leotard and tights, or go for a simple t-shirt and leggings/joggers. Both options allow for ease of movement and ensure we can see your posture and alignment for personalized corrections.  For a more detailed video about ballet attire, please refer to the video at the bottom of the page 'Adult beginner ballet starter pack'

Footwear

Ballet slippers are a must! Not only to feel the part but also for technique and it's a great idea to invest in a pair. There are many different types and styles it can feel overwhelming! It's recommended to go and try some ballet flats in a shop so you can get a feel for what they are like and what will suit your feet best! Move Dance has a good guide on WHAT BALLET SHOES YOU SHOULD BUY. Alternatively, please see the video linked CHOOSING BALLET SLIPPERS - WHAT TO KNOW as it is a great in-depth overview of buying your first pair of shoes.

Additional things to bring

Please make sure you bring a water bottle to stay hydrated through out the class. Also be sure to bring yourself a little treat/snack for after class, you deserve it 😉
